After months of teasers and leaks, Huawei has officially launched the world’s first tri fold phone available on the market — the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate. This cutting-edge device features a unique foldable design with two hinges, allowing it to unfold into a tablet-sized screen, offering top-tier specifications and a futuristic user experience.
Design and Display First Tri Fold Phone
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is incredibly slim when unfolded, measuring just 3.6 mm thick, despite its advanced folding mechanism and powerful camera setup. Weighing only 298 grams, it strikes the perfect balance between portability and performance.
At its core is a single flexible LTPO OLED display, which adapts to different configurations. The screen delivers a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and supports 10 billion colors for vibrant visuals. The display resolution adjusts dynamically based on how it’s folded — from a maximum of 3,184 x 2,232 pixels down to 2,232 x 2,048 or 2,232 x 1,008 pixels.
Fully unfolded, the Mate XT Ultimate first tri fold phone boasts a large 10.2-inch screen with a 16:11 aspect ratio. Fold it once, and it becomes a 7.9-inch device. Fold it again to transform it into a 6.4-inch compact phone, ideal for one-handed use. The phone runs on HarmonyOS 4.2, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), but without Google services.
The software is designed to take full advantage of the massive screen, featuring multitasking capabilities like voice-to-text, automatic split-screen, real-time document translation, and photo retouching. Huawei hasn’t confirmed if these AI-driven features are cloud-based or run directly on the phone.
Camera System
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate’s first tri fold phone camera system borrows key elements from the Mate X5 and Huawei’s P series, offering a professional-level photography experience. Its main camera features a 50MP sensor with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and optical image stabilization (OIS), as well as variable aperture technology (f/1.4 to f/4.0) from the P60 Pro, which adjusts to different lighting conditions.
The rear camera setup also includes a 12MP telephoto lens with 5.5x optical zoom for distant shots and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera for capturing more in a single frame. The laser autofocus module ensures fast and precise focusing.
For selfies, the Mate XT Ultimate offers an 8MP front camera, discreetly housed in a punch-hole cutout on the main display. When the device is folded into its compact mode, this camera doubles as the main selfie shooter.
Battery and Charging
The Mate XT Ultimate is powered by three silicone-carbide composite battery cells, providing a robust 5,600 mAh capacity. It supports 66W wired fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging at 7.5W, meaning you can use the phone to charge other devices wirelessly. There’s also 5W reverse wired charging, for those who prefer a cable.
Pricing and Availability
Available in two sleek color options — Black and Red, both with gold accents around the hinges, edges, and camera module — the Mate XT Ultimate is priced as a high-end luxury device. The 256GB model starts at $2,800, the 512GB version costs $3,100, and the top-tier 1TB variant is priced at $3,400.
However, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate’s international release remains uncertain. Huawei hasn’t launched a global foldable device since the Mate X3 over 18 months ago, and given this phone’s niche, premium positioning, it’s unlikely to be available outside of China anytime soon.
For now, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate first tri fold phone sets a new benchmark for foldable smartphones, combining innovation with luxury in one extraordinary package.
