This move marks Honor’s ambitious push into the premium market segment.
Comparison of Leading AI-Powered Foldable Smartphones Models
At a recent media briefing in Shenzhen, Honor’s CEO George Zhao Ming emphasized the competitive edge that the ultra-thin design of their new foldable smartphones provides. The global market for foldable smartphones is growing rapidly, with designs ranging from clamshell models that flip open vertically to booklet-style devices that expand horizontally into tablet form.
Honor’s new flagship, the 5G-capable Magic V3, starts at 8,999 yuan (US$1,238). It boasts a folded thickness of just 9.2 millimeters and weighs a mere 226 grams, making it slimmer than similar models from Samsung and Huawei. The more affordable Magic Vs3, starting at 6,999 yuan, is also impressively slim at 9.8 millimeters when folded and weighs 229 grams.
But it’s not just about being thin, Zhao pointed out. What’s more important is enhancing and fully utilizing the capabilities of a phone when it’s unfolded. The Magic V3 does just that, with AI features designed to improve user experience. For example, the phone uses AI to simulate defocus lenses, which can help with myopia and are compatible with video and reading apps. Additionally, AI enhances motion-capture photography and organizes photo albums efficiently.
Zhao highlighted that unlike other smartphone makers who often rely on third-party AI technologies, Honor focuses on developing on-device AI. While the industry is quickly adopting AI with cloud computing services, it’s on-device AI that will truly make a difference, Zhao said.
This strategy underscores Zhao’s belief that AI will transform how users interact with Honor smartphones, helping the company gain a stronger foothold in the premium market amidst intense global competition.
